The intention behind these outdoor lessons
The dawn of the century may seem like a distant age, yet the changes in our social, economic and personal lives have been accelerating at an extraordinary pace. Technology has become so deeply woven into our lives that it can sometimes overshadow our innate human capacities. Mathematics, however, can be experienced in a very different way—alive with rhythm, ratios, geometry, technology and nature. This lesson will transport students into the fascinating world of numbers, geometry, map-making, measurement and much more, through a fortnight of fieldwork and classroom experiences. The lessons will bring together mathematics, technology, geography and nature's outdoor classroom, enlivening learning while creating opportunities to build lasting relationships with peers and teachers. Classroom work will be interwoven with treks, camping and stories of the intrepid surveyors of the 19th century. The journey will culminate in one of the great achievements of surveying: the naming of Mount Everest and the determination of its height above mean sea level. On the penultimate day, students will watch a film connected with this extraordinary mountain and the people who sought to measure and understand it. Teachers, parents and educators who are interested in bringing their children, who have completed Grade 9 and are entering Grade 10, are also warmly invited to join the lesson as observers.
